Introducing Dylan Carpenter of the Honors Program Student Advisory Board!
If you recall, last week we announced a new member of the Honors Program Student Advisory Board. Now, believe it or not, we have another new member to introduce this week. His name is Dylan Carpenter! Dylan’s creativity and outgoing spirit will lead him to do great things on this board, and we are excited to be working with him. As always, take a look below to read Dylan’s introduction and find out if you have anything in common!
Care to share some background info about yourself?
Well, my name is Dylan Carpenter. I am an in-state student who has an international mind. By that I mean I’d really like to travel the world someday. My go-to travel destinations would probably be Milan, Italy, and Seoul, South Korea—but I would walk, bike, fly, submarine (can that be a verb?) anywhere, really. When I’m not traveling the world, I’m probably spending some quality time running with friends, making amateur digital or watercolor art, and trying new foods. Nobody asked but if I could be one food for a day, I would be rice because everybody would love me and I’d get to just sit in a nice little sauna pot all day until I’m ready to be eaten.
What do you enjoy about your studies at CU?
I really find studying humanities rewarding because it’s not just the study of arts, but the study of how people just like you and me learned to grow, love, and think. Whether it’s a wildly fun Shel Silverstein poem or a lecture on Russian Formalism, I always find myself walking away with a greater, more appreciative understanding of the way things work. Thanks to all the people who led the way! I’m also in the Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations. I revel in being able to learn from a perspective that is not eurocentric and using that foundation to fuel my passions and projects.
What is your favorite memory of being in the Honors Program?
My favorite memory is being in Smith Hall, an Honors RAP, and meeting my best friends at an event about the brain and memory (ironic, I know). We barely knew each other but as soon as we got to the concession stand, I just have this vivid memory of all of us screaming in unison, “Chai tea!!!” The rest is history. Yes, my friendships started with food and, if I’m lucky, will end with food as well (a little Last Supper moment). We went to almost every event afterward together under the pretense that we would (1) most definitely be getting chai tea and (2) never be going alone—oh, and (3) learning something new and fun, of course!
What was your motivation for joining the Honors Program Student Advisory Board?
It’s moments like my favorite memory in the Honors Program that inspired me to be that person behind the scenes. That way, I can make moments like those possible! I want to be a bridge that connects students with their favorite beverage, or any other resource necessary to succeed and have a little fun in the process. Oh, and I do hope I get some chai tea out of this, too, if at all possible.
What is a weird talent that you have?
Something I think you should know about me is that I have two double-jointed thumbs and I’m not afraid to use them!
