Take a Look at These Upcoming ASSETT Events: “CODE:SWITCH” Speaker Series
Have you ever heard of CU’s Center for Teaching & Learning? It is a great resource for instructors and graduate students to utilize consultations, teaching resources, programs, seminars, and workshops! For the most part, the Center for Teaching & Learning isn’t tailored towards undergraduate students, but it does generate some occasions where all CU affiliates are welcome. One such example is the events hosted by the sub-department, ASSETT (Arts & Sciences Support of Education Through Technology). ASSETT often hosts a slew of events, two of which are actually coming up this week. Take a moment to look into these particular experiences–both part of the “CODE:SWITCH” speaker series– and find out if they are the right fit for you!
Event 1: Futureproof author Kevin Roose to speak
This event is the kick-off for “CODE:SWITCH” 2021-22, a speaker series hosted by the ASSETT Innovation Incubator Inclusive Data Science team. It will feature a virtual keynote by rising author Kevin Roose and is scheduled for Wednesday, October 13 from 2:30-3:30pm.
In case you were wondering, Kevin Roose is an award-winning technology columnist for The New York Times and the best-selling author of three books: Futureproof, Young Money, and The Unlikely Disciple. He is also a regular guest on The Daily, and is unafraid to make appearances on TV and radio shows. As his work suggests, Kevin enjoys writing and speaking about automation and A.I., social media, disinformation and cybersecurity, and digital wellness.
This event dives into Kevin’s most recent book, Futureproof, and answers the lingering question: how should we prepare for the future? It will also explain how he went about creating such an intensive novel. Spoiler: he interviewed experts, read a ton of books and papers, and went in search of answers.
Attending this event will help you live a happy, fulfilling life in the machine age by rediscovering your biggest asset: your humanity. To learn more about Kevin Roose, or to register for this session, click here.
Event 2: Coded Bias virtual watch party featuring Q&A with director Shalini Kantayya
The second opener of ASSETT’s “CODE:SWITCH” is a virtual watch party of the Coded Bias documentary, followed by a Q&A session with director Shalani Kantayya. This event also takes place on Wednesday, October 13, but from 7:00-8:30pm.
In short, Coded Bias explores MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini´s journey to push for the first-ever legislation in the U.S. to govern against bias in the algorithms that impact us all. It also ponders two crucial questions: what does it mean when artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly governs our liberties? And what are the consequences for the people AI is biased against? It’s an unsettling thought, but one that holds significance in our ever-advancing world.
Like the previous event, you can learn more about director Shalini Kantayya or register for the event by clicking here.
In my opinion, both of these events are worth attending! ASSETT is all about integrating technology with pedagogy to promote impactful learning, so you will leave feeling refreshed and more aware of your social circumstances. You won’t regret it!
