Introducing Luce Gibbs of the Honors Program Student Advisory Board
The Honors Program Student Advisory Board is proud to announce a new team member: Luce Gibbs! Although the semester has just begun, it has been great getting to know Luce and we look forward to their presence here at CU Boulder. If you see them around, feel free to stop and say hello!
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hi, my name is Luce! I am nonbinary and I am a sophomore at CU Boulder. I am really happy to be here to work on mental health activism and LGBTQIA+ activism, especially when I can draw from my own experiences. I’ve been told I am pretty creative, hence why I spend a lot of my free time–when I have it!–either writing or creating art. I am currently writing a story about two angels who navigate the challenges of a brand new universe; I am having so much fun with it! I love science fiction and I think part of that shows up in my writing (I got really involved with Star Trek as a kid, and I’m still a space nerd at 19). My nerdiness also comes out in my passion for video games, of which my favorites are the Borderlands series, Hades, and Webkinz. And yes, the latter is still going strong in 2021.
What are you studying here at CU? What drew you to this path?
I am a psychology major minoring in creative writing. On top of that, I am pursuing a certificate in social innovation! This academic path attracted me because I am really passionate about mental health and how we can make it more equitable. This means recognizing the systems of oppression in the mental health world and how they impact treatment and patient outcomes. Some day, I would like to help revolutionize inpatient care to be more compassionate and humanizing. In regards to my minor, I love writing and it only made sense to study creative writing to hone my craft. I’m having so much fun in my workshops and learning how to improve! The social innovation certificate ties back into my passion for activism and equity; I really want to help people by dismantling oppressive systems. This certificate will help me learn more about how to do that!
What do you enjoy most about being in the Honors Program?
I love the smaller class sizes because I have a few learning disabilities that can make larger classes difficult. Having more personal relationships with my professors and classmates is better for when I require help or need to ask questions. These class sizes have also helped me find a lot of people with similar passions and they have helped me make new friends in my major. I met some really amazing people in honors last semester! I also love the sense of community these small classes foster, leading me to go to events and recognize others! In short, I feel heard in the Honors Program, and that’s something that I really appreciate.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself!
I can’t really think of too many fun facts! I guess one fact is that I am really into punk, goth, alternative, and old rock music! I spent all of last summer listening to Alice Cooper on loop. I think my favorite song of his is “Bed of Nails” because it has such a catchy tune and upbeat tempo, despite being somewhat horror-core!
