What Does It Take to Be an Honors Scholar?
The Honors Scholars Program is an undergraduate community within the Honors Program at CU Boulder. It is a great way for students to become involved in the Honors Program, network with professors and students from various majors, and enroll in courses with no more than 17 students. Not to mention the Honors Program sponsors events like Coffee Hours and TV w/ a Prof where there is food, intellectual discussion, and showings of hit TV shows! Sounds good, right?
You can sign up to be an Honors Scholars Candidate here, but to graduate as an Honors Scholars Recipient, you have to uphold your end of the bargain. Check out the Honors Scholars Program requirements to avoid probation in the future!
Getting Started
Declare your intent to be an Honors Scholar by the end of your fourth semester at CU.
Long Haul
You must enroll in and complete 9 credits worth of Honors courses. However, only 6 of these credits can be taken in the Honors RAP, and at least 3 of the 9 credits needs to be upper division.
Every Semester
Attended 2 Honors program events per semester. Not so fast, remember, only 1 of these events can be a coffee hour.
Complete 5 hours of community service per semester. This can be achieved by attending one of the Honors Scholars Program’s sponsored events or on your own. Keep in mind, your community service must be hands-on.
What does this mean? Basically, donating objects or collecting items do not equate to hours volunteered. This includes but is not limited to collecting box tops and donating canned food items, clothing, or toys to a drive.
A few examples of hands-on service are volunteering for a: hospital, homeless shelter, school, 9 Health Fair, Habitat Humanity, I Have A Dream Foundation, Peanut Butter Lovin’, Better Boulder Day, and so on. Likewise, if you plan or organize a community service event, this counts towards your 5 hours. If you are still unsure about your community service, feel free to reach out though email at honorsscholars@colordao.edu.
When All is Said and Done
You will need to submit a transcript during your final semester at CU and have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.5 by the time you graduate.
And That’s It!
If you complete each of the requirements stated above, you will be graduating as an Honors Scholar in no time!
