The Journey Through Tanzania By Will Deselms
Leaving the country with people you aren’t too familiar with can be a scary thought, but sometimes the uncomfortable moments in life can be the most memorable. This past summer I went on a three-week study abroad program to the beautiful country of Tanzania. It feels so long ago already, but the vivid imagery that has stuck with me will probably never leave. Over the three weeks in Tanzania, the group of 11 CU students and our professor, Dr. Laura Deluca, moved from place to place sleeping mostly in tents, which is why this program is said to be one of a kind offered here. Our journey took us to many tribe lands, including the Maasai, and the Hadzabe, who are some of the last hunter-gathers. To top that off, we had the incredibly unique experience to hunt with the Hadzabe, which provided us a tasty hyrax for breakfast. From the urban areas of the country to some of the most isolated areas imaginable, our group had the chance to truly experience life in a different way. I encourage anyone that is looking to study abroad, to take time and think what they really want to experience while they are gone. This was a relatively short time, but the amount we covered made it unforgettable. There is so much to see in this world, and opportunities like this can be just the beginning in your exploration!
My name is Will Deselms and I am currently a Junior studying Psychology here at CU. Originally from Oklahoma, I always knew I wanted to attend college near the mountains, which brought me to this amazing city. My love for the mountains drives me to spend any extra time exploring them and the nearby towns.
