How did you get started teaching an Honors Class at CU?
I’ve taught two honors classes at CU but the first one I began teaching was the Advanced Writing class (3220). I was asked by the director at the time to start the class and it was very exciting because it allowed for students to focus on their discipline throughout the semester on one big project. The previous class I was teaching in the program in writing and rhetoric was great as well, but it was more about writing 3 different papers over the semester, so the students didn’t get as much sustained research on one topic. I also love teaching the lower division honors class because it gives students an early look at what it’s like to write a thesis.
Can you explain your efforts in diversity and inclusion on campus?
I am the chair of the Boulder Faculty Assembly Diversity Committee (DIVC) in which we work to bring events and programs to campus with a focus on social climate inclusion. I also just finished a presentation at the UMC on International Students and how to be more inclusive. I’ve also been involved by starting the English as a second language program in which we now have four upper-level classes to offer and 10 lower division. I work with the CU dialogues program on campus to hold discussions geared towards international students.
