Community service opportunities
This semester, the Honors Advisory Board implemented a community service requirement to all Honors Scholars candidates. While the program greatly values academics, we also value community involvement in the form of service. Students have the option of either completing 5 hours individually, or participating in Honors Program sponsored community service. We are excited to announce that we will be offering Peanut Butter N Luvin’ and Boulder Creek Clean Up this semester!
PB N’ Luvin is a community service project sponsored by CU’s Wesley Chapel. Participants will meet at the Folsom street location on March 10th to first prepare peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and fill bags with other necessities (i.e. toiletries) for homeless people. Then, participants walk towards Pearl Street to pass out and interact with Boulder’s visible homeless population. Described as “50% feeding hungry folks and 50% sharing love with them,” this act of service is interactive and participants can directly see the difference they’re making. It is less of a “them” and “us” and more of a “we” community organizing event meant to bring people together, and also help the less fortunate out with not only tangible products, but meaningful interactions.
Rain or shine, be sure to dress appropriately for the weather and be ready to walk around the town. The purpose of this service is to not only provide sandwiches, but to show people they are worth the time of others. The first 10 people to sign up on D2L before March 10th will be held accountable to attend. Honors Candidates will receive an email once this link is open.
Boulder Creek Clean Up will take place mid-April. After being equipped with gloves, trash tongs, and trash bags, participants will spend their afternoon cleaning up Boulder Creek. Make sure to dress for the mess! Prizes for most trash and most unique piece of trash were offered last year at the event, so we are hopeful this tradition will continue.
Interested in participating? The Honors Advisory Board will announce the official date soon, but plan on a Sunday morning in April.
If you choose to fulfill the community service requirement on your own, don’t forget to fill out the form on D2L under “content” with a supervisor signature, supervisor contact information, and a description of the service you volunteered for.
Happy volunteering!
