Featured Student: Meghan Dulsky
Meghan Dulsky is a senior Norlin Scholar at CU Boulder and is majoring in Classics, with a minor in Italian and a minor in Technology, Arts, and Media. Meghan has been involved with the Honors Program for the majority of her career at CU Boulder, which has encompassed enrolling in honors courses and working on the Honors Journal Editorial Board, both as an editor and as the publicity and finance director. Meghan is currently researching and writing her honors thesis, which she plans on presenting at the Special Undergraduate Enrichment Programs conference this spring as her research component for her Norlin Scholarship. She will defend her thesis in the Fall semester of 2017.
Meghan is concentrating her thesis on the Roman presence in Scotland, emphasizing the societal roles that women played during, and after, the Roman invasions of Northern Britain. She plans on combining the literary evidence from Roman historians and early Christian sources, with the archaeological evidence found in Scotland that dates to this era of history. She plans to provide further evidence that, despite the overwhelming presence of the patriarchal Roman empire, early Scottish women were able to maintain autonomy, and even hold positions of authority throughout early Scottish history.
Meghan studied abroad at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland during the Fall semester of 2015, and used this opportunity to create the foundations of her research. She received the Herodotus Travel Grant from the Classics department, which not only funded her tuition and housing expenses, but gave her departmental support to study and collect research in the epicenter of her selected topic. Meghan was able to visit historical sites that highlighted the Roman presence in Scotland, including the Roman Wall in London and Iron Age fortresses and burial sites in the Scottish Highlands. She was also able to correspond with one of the curators of the National Museum of Scotland and document the artifacts housed in their exhibits.
Meghan has loved the process of researching for and writing her thesis, and is eager to present and defend her work in the coming semesters. She hopes to continue contributing to Classical scholarship by obtaining her Ph.D. and teaching and researching within the field.
