Why You Should Be an Honors Scholar
As the 2015-16 school year comes to an end, the Honors Student Advisory wants to remind you that it is never too early to start planning for next year. In the fall of 2016, we are launching the Honors Scholars Program! The Honors Scholars Program is a great way to open up a variety of opportunities for you. So, what exactly are these opportunities? And what makes being an Honors Scholar so great? Well, let’s begin:
- Through the Honors Program, we are able to take honors classes. Because honors classes are small, it is a great way to get involved in intellectual discussion and build a relationship with a faculty member. In one of my honors classes, Dr. Bartlett (Professor of Nutrition and Health) asked my class if we wanted to play on her intramural volleyball team! How many D-1 students get to say that?
- The Honors Program offers classes in most majors including core curriculum. The various courses allow you to uncover your hidden passions. Sam Bennetts, a member of the Student Advisory Board, took one of the honors geography classes taught by Dr. Hickcox and changed his major!
- As an Honors Scholar, you are able to attend awesome events hosted by the honors program. Between T.V. with a Prof, Coffee Hours, Distinguished Lectures, and the Honors Thesis Symposium, we have events for everyone. These events are mind-opening, friendly, and entertaining. Peter McGraw evaluated Parks and Rec and pointed out the reasoning and logic behind humor. Dr. Owens commented on how Modern Family critiques and describes the social stigmas on the changing family. Plus, every event provides FREE food. Who doesn’t like free food?
- Lastly, the Honors Scholars looks great on resumes! This is a great way to be recognized as a part of the honors community without having to write an honors thesis. (If you want to do both, we would love to have you!)
No matter what the reason is, the Honors Scholars program encourages you to get involved and become a part of an intellectual community on campus. Interested? Great! We hope to see you next year!
