Distinguished Lecture Series: “We are here for the Women” with Dr. Jennifer Fluri
In the last few years, it seems that the world’s eyes have been truly opened to the plight of women around the world. From the kidnappings in Nigeria to the brutal attempt to murder Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, the violence against women, though not new in any way, has been brought to center stage. However, what is striking and so encouraging to me is that coursing throughout these awful news stories is a strengthening force of empowerment. Women around the world are choosing to stand up and speak out against injustice – injustices against their own selves and bodies, as well as for those they care about. They are becoming peace activists, presidents, ambassadors, and warriors. Though I am often sick with the weight of the world’s sorrow and darkness, the resilience and courage I see in these women is a refreshing spring of hope. It seems that the conversation about gender and conflict is being redirected in a very inspiring and positive way.
With this in mind, I am so excited to announce this semester’s Distinguished Lecture Series, entitled, ““We are here for the Women”: Afghanistan, Time-Space, Gender, and Scales of Violence,” by Dr. Jennifer Fluri.
Dr. Fluri is a feminist political geographer concentrating on conflict, security, and aid/development in South and Southwest Asia. She is particularly interested in understanding the spatial organization and corporeal representations and experiences of individuals and groups working and living within conflict zones.
This lecture draws from primary research on Afghan women’s civil society organizations and their peace building and conflict mediation efforts. The presentation will focus on interviews with Afghan conflict mediators (both male and female). This will be followed by an analysis of gender and the geographic dimensions of various conflict mediation techniques. The lecture will conclude by examining the role of honor in the escalation of conflict and its mitigation. The role of gender and violence in the creation and maintenance of honor within Afghanistan will be compared with that of the U.S. military.
We hope to see you there! Pizza will be served at 6:00 PM.
